US satellite falls back to Earth

The US space agency, NASA, says a decommissioned satellite crash-landed on Earth between 3:23 and 5:09 UTC on Saturday.

The precise location is not yet known, and NASA is waiting for confirmation on details.

The Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite, or UARS, was decommissioned in 2005, and began to slowly fall back to Earth.

It was predicted that although most of the 6 ton satellite would burn up during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, surviving debris could hit the planet.

NASA says the satellite re-entered the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. Earlier, NASA predicted that the spacecraft would likely land somewhere in Canada.
